Long-term the sps will need a large amount of light (MH at a few inches). However, while it's in its "brown" state you need to slowly re-acclimate the coral to progressively stronger light.

Start in a lower light area of the tank and move the coral to a brighter spot every week or two. You should see that the brown color slowly fade away (possibly very slowly).

SPS corals have few natural defenses to ward of other corals so you must make sure that no LPS corals, or other nasties, touches the SPS coral.

Water flow is important too - but take it easy to start off with.

One of my local fish stores specialises in negelct of SPS corals. They have 175W halides mounted three FEET above 24" deep tanks. Needless to say their acroporas never look good.

I got an unhealthy SPS that has been neglected, for free, on Xmas eve.

I want it to be healthy.

Suggestions for nurturing it back to happiness? What are the most important considerations?

Thanks for the response.

I have a 1000 watt MH light, in addition to a West-facing window. It's in a 30 gallon rubbermaid tub with natural sunlight for now.

I think I am going to trade the SPS to someone who is ready and able to nurse it back to health.

I am literally still filling my 135 with water and getting ready to cycle it. Not a good place for a SPS, I bet.

Poor thing. I'm happy I saved it from certain death. I am far from ready to care for stonies unfortunately.

How about food in the meantime? What do they 'eat'? Just calcium?
