Does anyone know if HQI bulbs get as hot as regular MH bulbs?

I am currently running 3 x 400 MH and they get much hotter than my old 250s did. I am going to do something different to avoid this heat.

Barry,
It depends on the bulb and the ballast your using. You use 6.5K Iwasaki's now, Right? PFO standard ballast? I have read that the 20K's ran on the PFO HQI ballast don't get as hot as the 6.5K's do. I run 2x250 watt double ended HQI's (10K) and I have a 400 watt Iwasaki between them. The 400 watter gets a lot hotter then the HQI's...

I think you might be better served getting a chiller......look in the Recycler for a used one...Or switch over to 20K's and HQI ballast, you won't need any VHO's with the 20K's......

Hey Mark.

I have a 6500K in the middle and 10000K Germans on each end. All three 400 watter. I wish I would had stayed with the 250s.

I know I should get a chiller and everyone has told me that but my tank in installed in a double closet and no room beside or under the tank. I can not add anymore amps to this breaker as I don't think it will work as when I had the 90 setup with the 180 I kept popping the breaker. For me to get this room rewired I was quoted 1500.00. OCH!

I was going to Jeff's this coming week-end but ended up going this past Sat. I e-mailed you but no reply? Hope to catch you the next time.

Is your 180 60" long? I think you will be fine with 3x250 watt Iwasakis.......

I wonder????? Try changing the 6.5 to a 10 or 12K bulb and see if that helps...

What's the temp in the tank room? Did you try sitting a large room fan in the door way of the tank room so you can blow cool air in?

I have a new 12K bulb if you want to try it out.

Hi Mark, I got the e-mail address on this BB that you have.

This is what I think I am going to do. Sell the 3 x 400watters and go back to 3 x 250 watters. That is what I had on my 90 gal which is the same depth (24") is the 180. I never had that much problem with the 250 raising the temp up that much. Like I said I really do not have the room for a chiller or believe me I would have one. I do have central AC but would have to cool the whole house so I might just get a window AC for the fish room. If I can keep that room temp down to lets say 72 - 74 so you think that would help. My fish room runs 80 degress when the lights come on in the tank, the rest of the house is 74-76.

I first had 3 x 6500K Iswaski but really did not like them so I bought 2 10000k germans that I am running on the ends and keeping the 6500K in the middle.

I did have 12K on my 90 with 10,000K PC and I did like the look of it.

If you know of someone that wants my 3 x 400 watt MH setup, let me know. It has been setup less than 5 months.

1 dual ballast (PFO )
1 single ballast ( PFO)
cords
reflectors
5 bulbs ( 3 X 6500K and 2 X 10000K Germans)

Barry

PS check your e-mail address on this BB

Barry,
Want to trade one of the 10K bulbs for 2 month old 12K

Try setting up a large fan in the doorway of the tank room, this way you'll be blowing the cool air from the other rooms into the tank room.

I think your biggest problem was setting it up in the closet, its not letting outside air in very well. The 250's might not even help much. You could set a chiller up outside the room and run the pipes through the floor or along the wall, this way you wont have the heat from the chiller in the tank room and you can use another circut.

The E-mail address is correct

Mark
