Anyone have any success with any crab catching devices? I saw a rogue last night that looked quite menacing. He was tan, looked like a green mithrax except his claws were shorter, his color was different, and his claws were pointy and black at the tips. He took off before I could net him.

I did a search and could not come up with anything. I have tried the glass trick in the past and only caught hermits.

Ernie, I have had alot of luck with the inverted soda bottle trick.
Cut one of those 16oz bottles about 1/3 the way down (the 1/3 part left will be the neck and opening section). Turn the neck part and insert it into the body of the container. Bait with shrimp. The crab crawls in and then can't figure out how to get back out because the opening to the bottle is mid way up. Hope thats half way clear.

Thanks. Anybody use any purchased traps or anything more sophisticated?

Steve- what did you use to join the two halves of the bottle? tape?

Ernie, its just a friction fit if you cut it carefully. I would think that a rubber band would work if streched from one end to the other. I have one of those X-terminator traps, but it dosen't work well. I was trying to catch a mantis and could actually see him go in the trap, grab the food, and leave. There is a sensitivity knob on it that is used to adjust the trap doors sensitivity, but even with this adjusted out the mantis would not set it off. The next day I got a 16oz drink and had the mantis in 15 minutes.

Ernie,

To piggy back on what Steve said, you can heat a knife or a screwdriver to melt the bottle back togeather, or poke holes in both halves and use plastic zip ties. Also, you can cut the actual screw top of the bottle off to make the opening whatever size you need it to be.

Good luck!

I had on like that, but was pinkish w/black claws. I think it was responsible for an attack on one of my serpants. I caught him using a plain tall glass leaning against the rocks baited w/ silversides. It slide in to get the food, but couldn't get out because the glass is too slippery. It took me awhile because of the other critters that like silversides too

I didn't kill it, but it's doing a life sentence in the sump where I can control it's feeding habits.
