I have a 3 gallon kiddie tank that I gave it to my kid for Christmas. What should I put in it? Nano reef is out of question. If the older one is going to poke his finger into the tank everyday and the little one is going to do the same while his hand is covered full of apple sauce, I don't know if the mushroom is going to like that!

I have a mini filter for the tank, 9W PC in the canopy, what do you guys suggest that I put in the tank? The kids been bugging me since Christmas.......ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Put some gravel(freshwater) and some sagittaria(plants). Make sure the bulb is in the 5500-6500 range for the plants. Get some neon tetras or lemon tetras or something similar.

I agree with the other poster. go fresh with plants or trick them and maybe put in a beta for them to watch. Just as colorfull and you can aquascape like a salt IE sand and dead coral skeleton and Fake LR.

Or just put a dwarf lion in there. Your kid will only try to feed it the applesauce once!
(just kidding) seriously though, the beta or neons would be a good choice IMO because you can teach the children how to care for them and they are much easier to maintain in a (Ultra-Nano)

We set up a 10 gal with 2 TR ocellaris clowns for my daughter 3 years ago.

It's got a HO filter for surface agitation (no media) and couple of microjets, a couple inches of seeded sand, a few rocks a bit of caulerpa (for nutrient export) add a few snails and a hermit or 2. She loves it and it has been absolutely maintenance free, in fact I think I've only cleaned the glass 3 or 4 times in 3 years.

It's been so bullet proof I'm thinking of putting one in her classroom.

"Dan", I would also go freshwater but if you must

go salt than I would do one of the following:
1. Sand, L/R, hermit crabs.
2. Raise brine shrimp, educational for the kids, and good for your reef tank after the kids go to sleep.

I have a mantis shrimp in my 4 gallon.(talk about only sticking fingers in once..)

I vote for the freshwater. You could go with fancy Guppies, platys, swordtails or even some barbs (stay away from tiger barbs, I had a few that would kill anything i put in the tank, including Bigger tiger barbs)

Or if you do go salt, why not use damsels? there are some nice-wait, attractive damsels that would live well in a 3 gal.

Set it up as a pod tank because fish will be boring to them.
That way they get to see creepie worms, pods, snails and all the other neat critters that we liked as kids.
And, you have something to feed your mandarin when the boys are not looking.

I go with Steve, sea monkey mania. Best of all if they screw it up who cares??? You could also get them to grow some macros in there too. And then when they have those sussed go for mysid's or something equally nutritional.
