I have been told that to frag a hammer, you need to break the skeleton apart but do not tear or cut apart the fleshy part. Instead, over time, (I'm talking about weeks) slowly separate the two halves and allow the hammer to heal and separate on it's own to the two halves. I considered doing this to mine, but I felt that the risk of killing the coral completely was too great.
My advice is don't do it.

I have read the same as Mitch, use a dremel to split the skeloton but dont break any tissue. The slowly raise one half untill the flesh splits on its own.

I fragged my Symphyllia when it grew large enough the polyp started to seperate. I cut the polyp on top first. Later I split the skeleton with a chisel. This worked well but there was no tissue conected inside of the skeleton. HTH
