I have a 300 gal FW planted aquarium. I have 4" flourite substrate, CO2 with controller, and about 3 Watt/gal lighting. I am new at this hobby and was not adding any Iron for the first few months. I was adding Potassium and my fish were adding the nitrogen. I was seeing slow growth and chlorisis. I bought a 2 liter bottle of chealted Iron and an Iron test kit. I have added about 1 liter of Iron in 1 week and have seen fantastic growth and color improvement, but I am never able to read even a trace of Iron 1 hour after adding it.

AH Finally the question:

What is a more cost effective bulk method of adding Iron? My first thought was Iron filings in a bag in the sump. I was told this would add ferric iron and I need ferrous. I am not a chemist and don't even understand the difference. My next thought was to add the yellow powdered Iron sulfate that I put on my maple trees.

What will the sulfur do to or for me?

What is another option for me to consider?

P.S. I have been asking the freshies but none of them seem to be nearly as sharp or technical as I found you guys to be when I did SW.
