I have a 240, two corner overflows - two return pumps (Better safe than sorry) they are mag24's - powerfull reasonably quiet and reliable) for a skimmer - I chose the cpr cy294 which I really like - I used the bio bail for the first 6 months thru the cycle and for a while afterwards - I then removed it and use that area of the skimmer for heaters etc... - powerfull relibale good skimmer - a little on the expensive side. but following the philosophy of two is better than one, the cpr also has two skimmer towers and venturi pheads - if one is not working efficiently (if I don't clean them often enough) then the other will still be doing the job - this skimmer is rated to do 500 galls though.

Depending on the size of the tank you basially want to size your pumps for 10X water turn-over but keep in mind the flowrates of your overflows. On a bigger tank if you have two overflows having two return pumps give you a redundancy for circulation. Iwaki, Little Giant's, Ampmasters, all have good reputations, for massive flow i.e. skimmer and closed loops I'd consider a Sequence.

For a skimmer I'd consider either an AquaC EV-240, Precision Marine Bullet 2 or 3 or an Aerofoamer.
