I have a branching hammer coral that I need to frag. The only thing is, I need to do this in the tank. The coral is big and attached to the back of the tank, rocks, etc. What is the best way to do this? I was thinking about cutting it with a pair of tin snips. What cleaning of the tools or precautions do I need to take before I do this?

hi.
Tin snap does not open wide enough to cut the hammer (no puns intended). Use something that can open up more. Or just use a piler and twist off a branch. It won't hurt it if you break it on the bare skeleton.

I have a rusty pair of wire cutters that I use on my hammer. Never had a problem
They look something like this.

I was reading on another board about coating the cutting instruments for fragging with PAM cooking spray. This appears to help cut down on corrosion and keeps the tools nice and lubed up, it does not appear to harm the tank in any way. I am not familiar with tin snips. It seems that if you are strong enough and the snips are sharp you will cut through. Even if it is a rough or munched cut you can clean the cutting up outside of the tank. I use a dremel tool for cuts outside of the tank with lps corals.
