Does anyone have recent experience with the Eheim Surface Skimmer? I have seen at least one post in the archives that was negative about it. (Maybe they haven't changed??) I have an Eheim Filter and would like to add the surface skimmer. ( I know the majority of you are death on Canister filters but I come from the old school and have always had good luck with it) This is for my 46 gal bow front. Thanks for any help.

If you are going to give one of these devices a try, I would go with the one made by Fluval. It is similar in design, but only costs $9.99 (That Fish Place).

I think there were a few threads about these in the "Nano Reefs" forum at Reef Central. You might want to do a search over there for more info. I think the poster was Lunchbucket.

Thanks for the reference. $9.99 would sure beat the 30.00 Enheim. I am might try making one from plans that I found on a different site. This is only a temporary fix until I put a sump system under this tank.

I used to use one on my planted FW aquarium with good results, but I no longer keep FW tanks. However, the skimmer performance depends on the water level of the tank (narrow range of effectiveness); if it is outside the optimum range, then its worthless.

Also, it does make gurgling noises, which can be minimized/elminated with adjustment.

Definitely keeps the surface clean, but pricey.

Thanks for your input, it seems to confirm what I have been hearing. The Eheim surface extractor is not worth the price. I have pretty much cleared up the surface film by redirecting the jets of my filter return and my powerheads. Again, this is only temporary until I can justify the cost of a sump. (with my wife!!) I had the Enheim canister from a previous 55 gal tank.
