Environment would be a typical reef setting with plenty of live rock to hide in.

Temp and Salinity should be natural reef conditions i.e. 80-84 degrees and 1.025 to 1.026 specific gravity. Basically the conditions that you would be keeping any marine animal in.

Preferred food is of crustacean origin such as crabs and shrimp. It is easiest to feed silversides and krill.

I highly suggest you purchase Scott Michael's Marine Fish Pocket Guide

This book is small and quite handy and is easy to carry with you to the LFS.

Snowflakes are fairly hardy, as are most eels. All it really needs is somewhere to hide and burrow, and good water quality (as with all fish). It likes to eat anything you will feed it, including live feeders (don't give them goldfish, not a good food, try mollies or rosies) of all kinds, shrimp, squid, clam, etc. etc. I used to keep mine in a 1.017 SG tank at around 78 degrees in a fish only tank with a very deep crushed coral bed with an UG filter, decorative corals (yes, I know, it's bad to have real corals that have been killed to decorate your tank, but that was a long long time ago), and a lot of tufa rock where he could dig caves.

All of the above info. is correct. Snowflakes are one of the most docile eels for the home aquarium. They are very hardy, colorful, and unlike many species will oftentimes spend a good deal of time out in the open. I have had one for close to two years. It has grown from about 7 inches to 18 inches. They normally will not eat every day, but feed voraciously every 2-3 days. A varied diet of silversides, krill, squid, clam, shrimp, and an OCCASSIONAL live feeder will be sufficient. Many people use feeding sticks to target feed eels. This gets them eating predictably, and depending on what other species you have in the tank, may be the only way they get anything at all. Their eyesight is extremely limited and they hunt largely by smell. They will eat very small fish, crabs, and some shrimps, however they are sdafe with cleaner shrimp species. An important fact to consider is that they are master escape artists and that is no exaggeration! Your tank must be completely covered and any small openings sealed. Many owners report finding them on the floor in the morning. They do like a lot of rock to hide under and if you have a sand bed, they will burrow ferociously under the rocks to make a den. They are wonderful aquarium species. JWT
