#reefs chat is a tremendous resource as well as a lot of fun for those interested in saltwater and reef aquariums. However, patience is a key ingredient in order to utilize and enjoy it. I have seen a number of folks get on #reefs chat, ask a question, expect an answer within a minute or so, sign off in disgust because they didn't get their question answered, and bad-mouth #reefs as being useless. Well, that isn't how it works. Most users on there are not going to give any reply at all to a question we don't know the answer to. There is virtually always an answer eventually when a knowledgeable person sees the question. If an answer doesn't appear on the first attempt, it only takes a repeat of the question a little while later. A lot of us log in to #reefs and then go about our business. We check back in occasionally to see if there have been any interesting discussions or any questions that we are knowledgeable enough to answer. Also, since a lot of us are "friends", the subject matter often strays away from reefs and the "saltwater" hobby, but eventually everyone will get back to the appropriate subject. Don't give up on it if your first experience with it is not altogether as you expected. A wealth of accurate current and cutting-edge information pertaining to this hobby can be had on #reefs for the patient person.
On another note, I highly recommend mIRC. Usually there is someone on #reefs knowledgeable enough about mIRC to help with problems or customizations.
