Hello,
A guy I know wants to sell me a Amiracle skimmer(vps2000,hurricane)and a Amiracle sl-50 wet-dry(with overflow) for 80.00. I can buy a good pump...but does this skimmer work(hehehe I already read the joke about the name)? I am needing a skimmer for my 75 FOWLR(36g sump/refugium). I know I can use the wet-dry as a sump for my 30...but I am really in need of a skimmer and don't have $$ to throw away on equiptment. If the Amiracle won't cut it do you have any suggestions?

I don't have an Amiracle skimmer, but I think almost any skimmer will accomplish a job, although some more efficiently than others. You can always modify your skimmer to make it more efficient as well. By the way, why can't you use the wet dry as your sump on your 30 gallon? If it's because it's a wet dry, that's nonsense, just take the biomedia out. Take a look at this thread on the subject of wet dry filters:wet dry

Yes! I can use the wet-dry for the sump on my 30...with no media. I was worried about this skimmer because I don't trust the guy selling it

I am kinda at his mercy because he knows I have never bought a skimmer

(Well there was that time I broke down and bought a Skilter for the Nano...need I say more?

) The only comments I found really were on another board where I find it hard to tell the difference between what works and what "everyone " else has

I have a Amiricle Pro-Line 200 that I converted into a refuguim. The first chamber had a Amiricle skimmer w/a Rio 600...what a piece of junk. Even my modified Seaclone out performed it and forget about the Rio thats another story. But for $80 thats not a bad deal as long as it doesn't leak. As mentioned already you can try to modify it to perform better.

Good Luck
Mike

nala,

I am having difficulty understanding your line of questioning. If I understand correctly you are looking for a skimmer for your 30 gallon tank.

Why be at this guy's mercy? After you get done with the $80, you will still need to buy a pump.

Why not check the reefkeeper's marketplace on this board for a used BakPak2 or a Remora? I bought 2 BakPaks for fellow board members. Each came with a Rio pump and including postage, each was less than $100.

My suggestion is to check out some other options.

HTH,

nala,

Another option is to check out Premium Aquatics, they are one of the sponsors of this board. From their home page, they have close out items. Every now and then, Jason lists returned items. I saw a Remora skimmer there a couple of months ago. The price was pretty good.

I need a skimmer for my 75g w/36 sump-refugium. He wanted to sell both as a set...I was just thinking of a use for the wet-dry.

I just talked to him and he says I can have the skimmer for 30.00. He's going to set it up for me with one of his pumps(this is a benefit of being cute

)and let me use it for a week and see what it pulls out
