Whats happening to my Purple Ribbon Gorgonian? (PIC INSIDE)

I noticed that my Purple Ribbon Gorgonian has started to peal. My first guess would be that it is shedding or something to become larger? Do they do this or is this a bad sign? I know the picture is terrible but its the best my dig camera can do until I get a new one.

Yes, these gorgonians do shed. I have the same type of purple blade gorgonian and it sheds about once every three weeks or so. I belive it does this to rid itself of algae growth and expose a fresh layer.

If you keep your gorgonian in bright light with rapid water motion and correct levels of calcium and alkalinity it will retain it's purple colour and start to grow. Don't be surprised if parts of it turn brown/tan if these conditions are not met.
