5 year old monti cap changing colors

Just thought I would share a rather strange experience.

I have a 5 year old green with purple rim, montipora capricornis that has recently started to change to purple.

Has it lost its purple rim or is the pic from an odd angle? It looks green with purple blotches in the second photo. Is it still growing?

It looks dead with purple coraline.

How is that experiment with the Ushio Vs. Iwasaki frag grow out coming along? I haven't heard much about it in the past few months. Give us an update.

chris_h, i think your right...

The first picture looks much better, what happened to it? It lost the growth form and colored edges. It has a really weird growth form now...

This coral is not dead, since it continues to grow. The photo on the bottom does not show any of the purple outer rim, as it presently tends to grown at a 45 degree angle downward.

A posted on another board suggested that this may be the start of new nodules of growth.

Wow, the first pic looks like an awesome coral whereas the second looks like live rock. What gives?

I agree with Starmstr.
This coral has been fragged so much its pissed off and is turning butt ugly so it will be left alone.

Its extremely unlikely that the whole coral would undergo a physiological response because it is being "fragged so much". More likely it is simply changing its growth pattern or color as a result of a change of its physical enviroment.
