Has anyone kept these? What are their requirements (I have heard egg cowries are extremely difficult, but that tiger cowrie's where supposed to be easy) as far as food, lighting, tankmates etc. Any info welcome, thanks in advance.
Try the gold ringed cowries; have 5 for 2 years in my 20gal reef. No problem with the shrooms, etc. They go out & roam on the glass at night. They actually bred but i can only notice about 3 small ones (.5 cm). The fishes must have eaten their eggs in the past. When i came home last night (9pm) i actually saw a pair mating.
there is a huge one (about 5 inches) in my tank at the time. my little sister needed one for a science project and i haven't been able to return it to the ocean because of bad weather. it is doing a very good job eating all of the algie and seems happy. i have heard of them being maintained for several years on algie. they are very pritty, but i think i will get rid of mine when i get the chance.
Got them from their natural home...the sea. Plenty of these here in the Philippines. But i only took 5 adult ones 2 year ago since my reef tank is only 20gal. Never took more since they survived and even mated in my tank. They only grow to about 3/4"; so very ideal for the reef tank.
I dont know about the type you have inyour tank but I have had measeled cowries in a tank with star polyps and mushrooms , and they ate both. I witnessed the mushroom eating. It only takes a second for it to eat it. I took it out and no more disappearing soft corals. They will live for a long time in a tank( i eventually let them go) as they are the native specie here.) I would not keep one in a tank w/ softies. Steve
