I would say I am passed the beginner point and moving towards advanced, but my equipment isn't. With a plan in place to have a 180 in a few months I want to upgrade to advaced stuff. What sites should I check out that will give me a consumer report sort of view on higher end equipment.

well all i can say is pick up some recent books at the library and read read read, i know its a pain in the ass but well worth the time , talk to a GOOD lfs and do some searching on the net , with what you will learn from reading , youll have a very good idea of what kind of products youll need and how to properly operate them
I have looked for just such a site but have not found one as of yet... I guess you could ask here or on any of a dozen discussion boards just like it as per each individual piece.... Good luck there.
Its not that someone has not tried to accomplish exactly what you are saying but by the time you get their biased opinion or some vendor starts with the coin coming in (your opinion changes slightly when there is money involved) then its just another commercial on the net.

I too have been searching for just such a site for several years, and have come up short. I wish the fish magazines would do more comparative studies, but they just don't. I think they avoid such studies because it might alienate advertisers, which they count on to keep themselves afloat.
Your best bet to find comparative information is on boards such as this. Conduct a search on past posts regarding the type of equipment you want to find out more about. That is what I did when I was looking to upgrade my old seaclone skimmer to a new "advanced" unit. I also posted several comparative questions on a few boards, and was pleased with both the quantity and quality of the responses.
You will find that alot of the hobbyist on this board have extensive knowledge with several different brands in each category. I have used both AquaC and Euroreef skimmers for several years and can tell you the pros and cons of each one. I can also compare serveral types of lighting setups, as I have used everything from Home Depot NO ballasts to different commercial MH setups, and quite a few power compact setups. I can't give you categorical data on each item, but I can give you my personal inferences and observations.

This was a pretty good link that review 4 of the higher end skimmers. I used it in helping to determine my new equipment. And as other have said, I read alot. Poured through the archives here, went back through issues of FAMA for product reviews, and when i could, saw some of the equipment in operation in person.

There very briefly -was- such a site, Reef Reviews, run by a gentleman named Brad Faber. I know, because I'm the poor sod who put in about 40 hrs of work for free to get it off the ground.
Brad intended to start up a Consumer Reports for aquarium equipment and actually had cooperation from quite a number of manufacturers. He told them he intended to do side-by-side product testing and they furnished him with their products to do it. He took the entire line of test kits from several manufacturers and reviewed them extensively and professionally. It was a great first step and it boded really well for the future.
It was, unfortunately, the only set of reviews Brad ever did.
Shortly afterwards he got married, graduated from Law school and passed the bar. He kept the site up for about a year without any further updates, then he finally pulled the plug and the URL disappeared. I consider it a great shame, as Reef Reviews had a hell of a lot of promise.
