I'm fairly new to the hobby but I'm ready for the next step. I'd like to start adding clams and SPS corals to my tank. My tank is a 72g bow. Currently I have 4 55W PC bulbs (2 actinic and 2 10,000K). I just made a canopy for my tank and I'm ready to upgrade my lighting. My choices are to change to 2 250W MH bulbs, or add 2-4 PC's. If I added 4 more PC's the wattage difference would be 440 vs. 500.
I know everyone raves about MH, but can SPS thrive under PC lighting only with similar wattage? I don't think my tank is deep enough to prevent PC light from penetrating. My concern about the MH's is the excessive heat. I'm really not too excited about adding a chiller to my system. If I'm able to keep the lights ~12 inches above the water, do you think I'll need a chiller?
I'd really like to know if there's anyone out there growing SPS and clams under PC light only. I know there are a million lighting threads out there but us novices really appreciate the advice. Thanks.
By the way, if there's an interest in the plans and pictures for a canopy to match the bow front stand, let me know and I'll see what I can do.
