I have a 7 gallon Nano Reef Aquarium that has been set up now for about a month. I have no problems with any of the livestock, but I do have a large problem with hair like algae, which seems to be growing quite well on my Fiji live rock.

It's not that attractive and I would like to remove it ASAP! Any advice on how to go about this? I have multiple turbo snails that can no longer graze on it because of its length. I've tried pulling it out, but it falls apart and drifts around in the tank.

Check out the website there, are plenty of pictures that show the problem at hand.

Thanks for the help!

Greg

the turbos won't clean that up. emeralds will eat it, lettuce nudibranch too.

but i would opt out on them unless you can borrow them from someone.
you are having a new tank cycle, algae is going to happen . turn the light cycle down, way down if you have no corals in there, and feed less.

the emerald could be neat in your tanks present state although he may get cagey with your hermits.

God, i hate hair algae...

Greg,
Are you using RO or RO/DI water for water changes and topoff? If not, you should start as tap water will have some phosphates that help promote the algae growth. Do weekly water changes (1gallon) should also help.
Since it is a new tank, the algae is common. Do the above and see if it gets better in a month or two. I used to have hair algae that you could comb but after a few additions (refugium, tang) and some time, there is 0 hair algae now.

Thanks for the info! I am seeking out a place that sells RO water, I'm not willing to purchase a RO system for a 7 gallon reef tank. I do 1 gallon water changes every Saturday. So I will try using RO water if I can locate it.

Thanks again for you help!
