If a tank is "reef ready" why does everyone seem to have a million things added to their RR tanks? I am just running my RR 60 gal with what it came with...is that bad?

All my measurements are good so far too.

Did You buy lights ? if so you added something ........

People add for different reasons for example a refugium can serve the following purposes:

1: place to grow macroalgea to feed certain fish when you dont want macro in the tank.

2. to serve as a copepod nursery and increase the number of pods available by allowing them to breed undisturbed

3. Reducing nitrates through algea growth and deep sand bed in the refugium

A sump for example can :

1. increase the water supply of the system making any changes that occur less dramatic

2. provide a place out of site for skimmers heaters excetera.

3. give you the ability to add things to the tank water slowly by firat dipursing it through the sump.

I have two extra powerheads, but I am using the lighting that the tank came with. That is why I dont have much coral, just some frags of button polyps and some xenia.

Lights are in the near future.

The aquarium manufacturers want to appeal to the greatest number of potential customers. Offering a reef ready system that costs $5,000 wouldn't appeal to most people. Most of the posters here keep animals that have needs beyond just pretty clean water and food. Stony corals, clams, and more difficult fish need extremely good water with high levels of calcium. Hence, more extra equipment. A lot of expensive extra equipment.
