Please help ID this light type

Are these VHO's? They are like regular flourescents, but very thick...

Those are not VHO. VHO 4 foot bulbs are 110 watt not 40 watt. Those are regular output. What do you mean bulbs are thick?

these bulbs are big and round, thicker in diameter than the flourescents I have seen before.

They are standard though?

4 foot tubes:

Standard output (STD) - 40W
High output (HO) - 60W
Very high output (VHO) - 110W

The difference is likely between T12 and T8, both of which are somewhat standard normal out put flourescents. Although I think the T8's are now called energy savers and a 48" lamp is now rated at 32w but gives the same performance as the older 48" 40w lamps.

The lower the "T" number, the smaller the tube diameter is a rough general rule. Right now there is talk of a T5 coming out the may relpace VHO.
