I dont have a pic....saw it at the LFS today. It looks quite similar to a moorish idol, same long dorsal fin. It is allegedly a grazer and the name starts with an "H"....lots of syllables too.

I would like to get one of these fish, but not before I read up on it and make sure that it will do ok in my tank.

Thanks.

That was help enough....thanks.

It is a Heniochus....MDL says that it is not reef safe. Some of yall seem to keep fish that are deemed unsafe for reefs and nto have a prob. I am sure that it is luck of the draw. Anyone have any experience with the HENIOCHUS?

It's either Heniochus acuminatus or H. diphreutes. Both are fairly durable as far as butterflyfish go.

I have seen them online in a lot off bigger reef tanks. They seen to say they are reef safe but I hear mixed opinions.

According to Scott Michael... the schooling bannerfish (heniochus diphreutes) is reef safe...the longfin bannerfish ( H. acuminatus) is not. The two are very easy to confuse. The schooling one though has a more rounded breast, less protruding snout and the middle bleack band ends at the corner of the anal fin. Hope this helps you.

I have three of them in my reef thank. They do graze on the alge , that the good part. They also graze on my button polpys. But they don't bother any of the other coral in my tank. They all school together. And It's worth it to me to have a few small loses. Its all in what you like>

Defidently a Heniochus sp. as panacea states. Not reef safe as they are in the butterfly family (I know some butterflys can be kept in reefs, but would you risk a short snoutted one like this?). The ones you see in the large reef tanks are probably Zanclus cacescens, the Moorish Idol (closley related to tangs but look similar to this). Another name for this fish is the Poorman's Moorish Idol (they are like a third of the price) (other common names include Wimplefish, Pennantfish, and Stripped Bannerfish.)
