upon checking my DIY magnet holder, i found it rusted thru:eek: . so any1 that uses these magnets for PH holders, check it closely time to time. it may look fine in the water, but unless its taken out n inspect,
it may look like this

Rust is ferric oxide, which is the same ingredient in phosban. So why is it harmful?

Here is a definition of ferric oxide -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron(III)_oxide
"Iron(III) oxide — also known as ferric oxide, Hematite, red iron oxide, synthetic maghemite, colcothar, or simply rust — is one of several oxide compounds of iron, and has paramagnetic properties. Its chemical formula is Fe2O3."

And here is a description of Phosban from the Two Little Fishes website -
http://www.twolittlefishies.com/tlf_prod_water.html?lang_id=1
"PhosBan?
Julian Sprung's Marine Aquarium Formula
This granular ferric oxide hydroxide adsorbs phosphates from saltwater and freshwater. Also adsorbs silicates and dissolved organics. Does not leach adsorbed substances. Long lasting and easy way to control phosphate levels permanently."

Phosban is more stable than the goop that's in there. If say its a good thing you found it as it looks more soluble than phosban or the kind we find on PHs. It would be harmful to fish, inverts, and i say irritate sensitive corals in that liquid form. Good thing it was stuck in place and not in the water column. Couldn't you have used a marine safe epoxy to seal the magnets in?
