Everybody has a flush kit on their RO/DI, but how often do you use it? Do you know Aquatic Reef Systems recommend you flush as often as once every hour? I saw an automated flush kit for $70 and thought, "good idea, but I can do it for less".
What you will need:
1 Parker Solenoid Valve
2 JG straight fittings
2 JF "T" fittings (if you use an auto shut off solenoid for the drain line)
1 3-prong AC plug
Teflon tape
1 Timer (or X10 appliance module)
Sissors
Extra 1/8" rigid tubing
1. Wrap all JG fittings with teflon tape.
2. Assemble solenoid
3. Attach plug to solenoid wire leads
4. Screw in straight fittings to solenoid
5. Turn off RO/DI, depressurize if shut-off solenoid is used
6. Replace flush kit valve w/ solenoid
The following steps are for those with backpressure activated Auto shut off solenoids (like Kent) which shut off drain:
7. Connect "T" between the solenoid on the "in" side
8. Connect other "T" to the output of the ro/di unit
9. Use extra rigid tubing to connect the 2 "T"s together
Now connect to a timer and set to activate every hour or at least once a day. For those with an auto-shut off kit the "T" between the output and the "in" side of the solenoid: when the solenoid opens the pressure to the output will be released opening the backpressure activated solenoid to allow the membrane to be flushed. If you have an Aquacontroller add a new timer and add the following statement:
OSC 1/60 ON/OFF
Then FSH ON
This will flush your RO/DI unit for 1 minute every hour.
