I have a rock with lots of brown mushrooms on it. Some of the mushrooms have grown on the underside of the rock. Since they don't get full light they do not open fully. How can I safely remove them from the rock and move them to a better spot?

If they reproduced to that location they will be fine there. Shrooms usually prefer subdued lighting. If they are not getting enough light they will pop off and relocate with the current.

i am wondering what they will do when in the presence of overly strong lighting. i recently upgraded my lighting and know they are not happy like the were and need to move but was unsure of how to goabout relocating them. any sugestions or just leave them be and let them figure it out for themselves?

reefsRcool: I recently upgraded from 100 watts of NO flourescent to a 175 watt metal halide over my 29 gallon. At first my mushrooms didn't seem to like it and would not extend fully, but after about a month they are doing much better. Give 'em a chance to adapt, and see what happens.

IME, they will adapt to their location as they grow. I have some that have grown a long tubular foot to reach around the bottom of a rock and grow on out.

As mentioned above, if they reproduced in/to that area- just let them take their own course.

If you really want to move them, you can slice them off the stem with a clean, unused razor blade and put them in some gravel with light current. I use a 2" tall microwave food plate with smashed live rock pieces in it, then place it in the bottom a an established tank with current just low enough that there is no danger of them blowing out. Once they attach to a small piece of rock, you can place or glue the rock where you want it. This is the method I use for propagating Ricordea. (You can also slice the disk into multiple pieces to make multiples!)

BTW, the stem grows back into a new mushroom, too.

:)

Thanks for the replies. I am going to let things be for right now. These things are suddenly growing like crazy. I must be doing something right.
