The Cyano saga continues.....

My cyano isnt phazed by my recent efforts to thwart its reign.

My stats.

ammonia -0
nitrite - 0
nitarte - 2ppm
phosphates - 0
silicates - 0

calcium 450ppm
mg - 1300ppm
alk/dKH 7.4

I cant seem to raise my dKH reading. I am dosing bi-onic and am dripping kalk. a 2.5g aquadose at 1 drop every 2 secs. 1.5 teaspoons per gallon.....

my ph is 8.2

I am also running ozone injection to my skimmer.... i cut my daylights for today. (two 14k 175w halides and 2-6700k 55w pc's) i only ran my actinics.

i am gonna do a water change tonight and siphon off the algae on the sand. I also need to water blst my pipe organ as it is being attacked... also...

any suggestions
I had a buddy suggest the red sea red slimer remover.. i woudl only do that as a last resort....

Hey Lawman, that sucks. Are you in any way feeding too much, maybe you could try reducing the amount your feeding? Im not sure, I had cyano about a month ago and the way i got rid of it was just to slowly reduce the amount of food being fed. Once the cyano was gone, I added food slowly, made sure fish ate it, then added more. This is what i have been doing ever since and my fish are happy and i am happy there is no cyano!

I am by no means endorsing this but if you must go the chemical route... some people are reporting success with a product called Chemi-Clean. Try a search here , there are a few posts. Sounds like your params are good so maybe with a little more patience your problem will take care of itself. Is your circulation good? Are your light bulbs fresh? . Good luck ridding your tank of the red menace :? .

Try a queen conch. I had two persistent hand-sized patches of cyano in my tank, even with 0 nitrates and phospates. I added a queen conch (~1.5") and within a week the cyano was eaten and it has not come back. The queen conch will get large, but at that point I'll give/trade it away for another small one. Others report similar success with fighting conchs. Good luck.

I new in reef tank. Can someone please tell me what is cyano & what is the cause of it? I have came across this word several times. I only found out what happen when NO3 is too high. Am still fighting it. So, I would like to be prepared & prevent this "cyano" before it take place.

well.. here we go....

I did a 10 gallon effective water change.....( siphoning a layer of substrate and went over the rocks..) I pulled a majority of the visible stuff out. I am gonna do another 10-15gallons tomorrow...

I am gonna add some bi-onic before bed.. hopefully i will see a raise in dKH. I am also gonna add another 30lbs of aragonite... i think i will siphon a little more off of the subsrtate..

my lights are new. the halides a 2 days old.... i just replaced my 10k's my pc's are 4 months old.....

i do not have access to queen conchs....

that chemi clean stuff is only a temp fix.. u need to be able to stabilize the system.. so u dont get more blooms.

my main return is a sedra 700. 600gph with the chiller. and have 3 maxijet 1200s (300gph each) on a wavemaker... the wavemaker is set to violent seas... i am in the process of adding a closed loop...

BTW- i am in the kitchen pondering my next move with the tank. a crap load of water dumped on my head from my kitchen lights. i have got a f***** roof leak... :evil: aaarrrgggggggg!

Lawman, IME if you hang in there and keep up the sound management, you will prevail. But patience is required. I had a minor but annoying cyano problem for months but it eventually ran its course and I never did anything drastic like use chemicals or starve my animals. I have been cyano-free for about 3 months now. Good luck!

i agree, i had a nasty outbreak when i moved my tank. all params were good. i kept with the constant water changes, blew the stuff off of my corals, and left it in areas which were not crucial, in an effort to allow it to use up whatever it is thriving on. when i was ready to give up, it started declining. so just keep at it, good luck.

ohh yes, no chemicals were used. besides phosphate remover/ carbon. which i would reccomend even though your levels are all good.
