for those of you who have mh light.do you use a uv filter or not if so why ,if not why not.do the higher wattage lamps need it more than the lower ones.

The mogul type don't need the UV filter, but the double-ended one usually do. Typical glass (window glass) are very good in filtering out the UV, while quartz glass are not.

Yes, but the mogul type have a quartz core (that little bulb inside the big bulb). When the large bulb get cracked, the quartz core may still work, and some MH have a safety feature build-in that kills the bulb if the outer bulb is damaged. Don't know if this is the case for those bulbs used in this hobby...
