Im interested in getting one of these from marine depot. Do they have an lcd screen that tells you the sg or how do they actually work. I know they send light through the water droplets and reads the spectrum, but how exactly do you get the readings from it.

Like all the refractometers being sold on the reefkeeping market, this is a simple optical device that requires no battery. You add one or two drops of sample water to a optical panel, then look through an eyepiece to get the salinity reading (must be viewed with relatively bright light source). It's dummy proof when you try it for the first time. Refractometers are very nice instruments to have.

Most of the ones on ebay are perfectly fine. To tell you the truth, all the lower priced refractometers work on par with one another. For customer service and warranty, you might want to pay a bit more and get it through a reputable vendor. And of course, we prefer if you use one of Reefs.org's sponsors to purchase one ;)
