I recently purchased a CPR AquaFuge RF12 Hang-On Refugium for my 30 gallon reef tank. I am planning on filling this with live sand to supplement my crushed coral/aruba shell/live sand substrate mix. Outside of that, I have heard several different uses for a refugium, but I am interested in hearing advice on what to do with this refugium. I picked it up at a great price at a closeout sale without a clear plan on what I was going to do with it! I am fairly new to the hobby, so please forgive me!

you put live sand and some rubble rock in there and grow different types of algeas or culerpa in there to help naturlly reduce your nutrients. when you trim the plants and throw them out you are exporting nutrients allong with them. good luck.

A refugium is also and excellent place to grow many different types of plankton and "pods". The recently published "Natural Marine Aquarium--Reef Invertebrates" has an EXCELLENT section on refugiums. Also, try searching our library --> http://www.reefs.org/library as well as the TRULY VAST database of Advanced Aquarist. You can also find much useful information searching the wetwebmedia resources here --> http://www.wetwebmedia.com (there's a search engine available on site as well, just type in "refugium").
