I'm planning on setting up another aquarium soon, and was wondering how high off the group you guys have your aquariums. I've heard various opinions about what ppl prefer ranging from 2 to 3 feet off the groud (one guy even said he preferred a look-down style tank with the tank on the tank directly on the ground). So, what do you guys prefer?

It seems that everybody stands in front of their tank- do you? I have my stands all the same size as commercial stands, think its around 37 inches high. Thats pretty good for standing, but you have to bend down a bit to see the back/top of the tank. Thats a good thing if there is junk there, I guess. Lately I discovered putting a chair in front of the tank...must be getting elderly!

hi.
Most of my tank are at least 30 inch off the ground. The advantage is that you can put things in the tall stand. If I want to look down, I just get a stool or a tall chair.

How about a mirror on the ceiling? :P

Len, I forgot how tall you are, or if you ever posted that piece of info. But I am 6'1, and I like to see tanks at my eye level, not looking down and see the tank top. I custom build my stand to 43", Just tall enough for my eyes to meet 2"down from the rim of the tank.

I also make my stand 12" longer than the tank, so I have places to put things on either side of the 6" extra space.

Len, please excuse the hi-jack, but I was wondering about the samething for a new 90g I'm planning.

For those of you that have 30+" tall stand, how wide is your tank?

I am concerned with top heaviness from a tall stand, 24" tall tank and then another 15+" or so for a canopy.

Is this a concern for anyone else?

My latest tank is built in a wall, and is 46" off the ground. The dimensions are 48"x30"x24"

Len, the highest one we run is about 40" off the ground.

2 of mine are the standard 27"

the 37 I just set-up I built a 32" stand, not much of a difference,
(wish I went about 6" taller)

(ok, stop with the 6" jokes)

My tanks are eye level.

My 15 high is 38 " off the ground. it's eye level when I'm at my desk. (it's on a shelf above the desk)

My 7 gal bow is 33 inches off the ground, eye level when I'm on the couch. Actually its a bit higher than eye level. but with that small of a tank I like to look up into it. It makes it seem bigger.

My 100 gal freshwater is the standard 30". Since I only really view this tank from across the room, it's okay. I never really look at it up close. (there's only goldfish in it, so it's not as interesting up close like my reef.)

I'm building my stand for my next tank, either a 46 or a 72 bow. So I'll be watching this thread closely.

My stand is 30" high, and the reasons it is so are:

1. I built two stands, one for the tank and one for the TV, both match, and the TV needs to be a certain height to look at comfortably

2. I wanted it low enough that when I sit in my rocker and play the guitar that I can see everything in the tank.

3. To create a balance between the stand, the tank, and the odd looking shelves above the tank

There you have it

My stand is 35" tall. This puts the tank at a convenient viewing height when I'm seated at my kitchen table.

I'm assuming you mean depth (front-to-back)? If so, mine is 18". No stability problems at all.

Len,

I built the stand for my 120 to be 44" tall. This is the perfect viewing height for me as I am around 6' 2" or so and the tank is in my entryway. Wonderful for viewing, but a pain when it comes to working in the tank itself. I need a step ladder to get to below say halfway in the front of the tank and at all in the back of the tank. All in all I would definately do it again as I much prefer looking into the tank than having to look down at it, or squat to look in. I have not "faced" the stand yet and have a rather interesting idea I'm going to try. I'll post pics once I have hopefully done it with success.

i would not recommend building a tank stand too low to the ground- if fish are gonna be kept it in- for one reason only..

fish seem to act far more skittish when kept very low to the ground i think it's both a combination of our movement (vibrations through the flooring are stronger/more easily felt ) , and the more rapid apparent motion of legs (i'm serious  ), as opposed to torsos/heads.

other than clam, or invert only tanks- i prefer eye level when sitting

The bottom of my tank is 36" from the floor. Only reason for this is to match existing height of wainscoat in room. Tank built into wall. Top of tank ( head) is just over 5 feet from floor. DIY stand.

IMO looking slightly downward captures the best colour rendition of the inhabitants, especially the "flourescent" ones.

My tank is 60x24x24 and is 36 inches off the ground. I like this because I don't have to stoop to look into it (eventhough I am not that tall), and younger kids, the ones that bang on the glass, cant reach the thank.

My 180g is on a std stand that is about 30in off the floor. It makes for good viewing from a sitting position. So if I were to add a tank in my LR or FR and it is for my guests to enjow while sitting down I would say that is the correct hight. If you want the tank to be viewed mostly from a standing position (my present preference) I would make it higher so at least the top of the tank will be at eye level; so I would go for the 42" stand.

So, it seems nothing really below 30" and then it's up to your viewing habits. That's some good info.

Your right I was referring to "front-to-back", but in LxWxH measurements. I would think depth would be confused with height, so I went with width.

50 inches from the foot. I only have my nano so it sits atop a dresser in my bedroom. I'm 5'9" and it is pretty close to being eye level.
