Does anyone have any experience w/ coldwater lobster systems. There is a local restaurant in my area in need of someone to maintain their lobster tank. I deal mainly w/ aquarium maintenance but am sure that I could handle that job. i would imagine that all that it necessary is an algae wipe down and H20 change every couple of weeks. any advice?

Maintenance of the chiller and keeping water quality very high. There are probably a few pleated elements in there you may have to change every once in a while too.

The tank has been sitting empty for a while..should I just mix up some water and fill it or is there something else that should be done to the chiller first?

A lobster tank shouldn't need much attention. Just regular water changes and cold temps. I would suggest you call some lobster pounds in New England and them what they do. The ocean up here rarely gets obove 60.

What type of maintenance is involved w/ the chiller. is there a coolant which needs replacement?

The unit will only need a freon charge every few years or so. This should be done by a certified air-conditioning repairman. Otherwise, the chiller shouldn't need any maintenance at all. Just make sure there are never any obstructions, such as debris stuck inside, in the plumbing. Blocking the water-flow could cause the coils to freeze, which will damage the unit.

Actually the water in a lobster tank is maintained at a much lower temperature than what is offshore Maine. I think it is about 40 F or so. Also make sure the condensor coil is free of dust. A wirebush is needed to keep it clean.

As long as the sale is good with fast turnover rate, it is a relatively easy job to keep the lobster tank in good shape.

hey joe,

down here in florida we have a grocery store called PUBLIX and they carry lobsters in the seafood dept. maybe you can go to your local store and ask them how they take care of their lobster tank. if they don't do it ask them who does.
i work for the PUBLIX warehouse, and i am trying to get three tanks with chillers on each of them. i will let you know anything that i find out!

good luck,
