Can in-line return pump be run without drilling tank?

Is it possible to run PVC from the inlet of the pump up-and-over the wall of the sump so the sump doesn't have to be drilled. I want to run an in-line pump to reduce heat but I'm worried about drilling the sump. In-line pumps tend to vibrate and I would think might crack the tank out from a bulkhead.

Use some flexible pvc or reinforced flex tubing with clamps between the pump and sump. That should appease your mind as far as vibrations. FWIW, I've seen plenty of bulkheads hard plumbed to the pumps without trouble. I use the softer hose and flex pvc to cut down on noise more than anything.

You could plumb over the side as long your pump was lower than the water level, this way once primed it stays primed. I'd have the sump drilled though.

I went with the PVC over the side of my sump for the return. If you put a union in the line as high as possible, you can take it apart to prime it.

Works great for me

When you first turn it on, a big mass of bubbles come out, but stops immediately

I did that on my closed loop that's plumbed over the top, I only have to use it if I take the plumbing apart for some reason. Like I said though, make sure the pump is below the water level. It's not good for a pump to have to draw water up at the intake (I'm not sure if they even can).
