Because of my center brace issue, I'm wondering how many people have had tanks leak, crack, break, explode, or otherwise fail. I'll count it if you personally know someone who has.

I count mine as a break, even though I didn't lose water, because if I hadn't noticed it, it might have easily cracked or busted a seal and leaked all over the place.

The guy I bought my first tank from said he had a tank bust a seal and squirt water across the room as it empties 3/4 of it's volume...but that was a very old tank that had sat dry in the garage for years, so rotten silicone is understandable.

BTW, roaches eat silicone, so if you store a tank in a place where roaches can get it, watch out. I openned a storage shed that had a bunch of diving equipment in it and saw 25 roached munching on the masks. After they scattered I checked the masks and some of them had holes munched out of the silicone....strange, but true.

I had a New 50 gallon that leaked after 2 months. The tank was empty within about 1 hour.

I've had a former customers have catastrophic water losses- one, a Federal Police Officer, pulled a bonehead maneuver and did fully unload his weapon before attempting cleaning- weapon went off and blew the front pane of a 180 gallon tank out.(I cant help but sniker everytime I think of this)
Had a customer/former coworker have the lower seal blow on her new 450 gallon system(300 display) the cycle just finished
the LFS I go to has a 200 gallon tank that they had lined with a pond liner(tank had a previous leak) for their feeder fish tank- the entire pane of glass "popped off" didnt break, just popped off and was sitting on the floor.
I've heard of others online but I dont remember hearing or knowing personally of anyone who had the tank burst from a broken brace.

i had a 26g half hex spring a leak on the silicone once. i was playing video games with a buddy and he goes "uh, is it supposed to do that?" ... little pinhole leak, little tiny stream of water about 3/4th the way down. I ran to petco and picked up a standard 55 and we quickly swapped everything into the new aquarium.

almost forgot- I had a 33 gallon flat back hex that my cat Diva enjoyed batting at the irridescent sharks(fw fish) as they swam- she punctured the silicon seal and sprung a leak about 3 inches from the bottom- happened 45 minutes before I was to serve my turkey day dinner I make for my friends the following Saturday- had to run out and but a 46 gallon tank and stand and make the switch while my friends laughed and ate dinner....

Anybody have a stand fail? This is my biggest fear. I'm sitting in my room looking at my tank and *BOOM*, tank on floor.

*Ace shivers at the thought*

I had a 10 g front glass explode from a dog fetch toy incadent. It is amazing how far 10 g of water will spread out on a floor. I would hate to have my 110 do the same.

I hate it too! We all have to face out fears though and I, for one, am getting a nice insurance policy to cover the tank (that's right, the tank is worth more than anything it would damage if it leaked. ).

The stand collapse thing worries me too. I thought it was particle board, but when I drilled a hole in it to accomodate the new possition of the overflow, I found it was solid wood...propably pine...that made me feel a little better.

I used to have a 40 gallon on a home made plywood stand that had been wet so many times the plywood was looking a little funny at the base. 8O That's why I bought a new tank and stand.

I have an AGA pine stand and I worry about it all the time. I have built stands in the past and I over build them because I don't want to worry. This tank I decided to go the lazy route and buy a stand. Next time 4x4's are going to hold my tank up.

If its any help in soothing your nerves, I have had an AGA stand on a 55 that is over 10 years old and looks as good as the day it was purchased. They look flimsy as hell but they hold up just fine.

Thanks! I know these things are engineered to hold but sometimes I look at it and say how the hell is this holding.

I had the center brace break in a 135 gallon Aquarium Design tank years ago. Luckly the front pain didn't break, I still don't know how.

I had a friend who had a front pain just blow out of a 150.

I know another guy who had the bottom fall out of a 150.

AGA stands are a joke. I reinforced mine (92 corner) with 2x4's before I put the tank on it. They might last for years, but I'm not going to take a chance and trust my tank (and carper, floors and sanity) to a few staples.

Back when all I kept was freshwater, all I would use were TruVu acrylic tanks. Once they are built, they become one piece of acrylic. You can pick a 55 gallon up by the top while it's filled with water. Reefkeeping made this question a bit more complex, as cleaning an acrylic reef tank is more of a challenge than a freshwater one.
I put an acrylic 150 in my wall for piece of mind, but half the time I wish I would have stuck with glass. When we have another earthquake here in Cali though, I'm sure I will be happy with my decision.

My latest stand was built into a wall, and I used 4x4's.

I was feeling good for about five minutes.

A staple holds better than a nail. Think about it: its like two nails with a brace across the top joing them for more streangth.
