In your own opinion what is the best sand to use in a reef tank. I like the sugar sized sand that is whitish or tan. I just want to know what type you use and why you hate it or love it.

Thanks,
Shane

bleh, I think it's all personal preference. I'm using Southdown right now and love it because it's natural looking, yet, I've seen plenty of tanks with crushed coral sand that looks killer too. Crushed coral is nice because it's a lot brighter white than Southdown.

i have several bags of the salt and pepper live sand in my tank, i love the biodiversity that came with it but i hate the asthetics of it, i found lots of worms/starfish in the sand but the color takes away from the tank i think. someday i will replace it

i prefer light colored sand. if the tank is large enough, i also like to swirl in various grain sizes (rather than a homogenous mixing), so that maybe this critter likes small sand and that critter likes mixed sand and yet another has a home in the big sand chunks ...

i like grainsized sand.....seems more "oceanic" to me...hence personal preference
