i was wondering if anybody knew if tiger cowries are reef safe. a bunch of people told me they are, but when i read the web sties, some say reef safe some say not.

a few lfs have them in there show tanks, and my lfs just got some in.

what everyone elses opinion

I had one that ate my sea urchin...This is in my experience though...i turned it into escargo....needless to say i have never owned another one... HTH

They are not considered reef safe Ryan, for several reasons. They will plow through algae, but apparently a lot of other things too. 8O

Whoever told you they are reef safe are those that don't have one in their tank for more than two weeks.

Let me know if I am wrong. :D

I have heard they might eat corals, and also when they are big they can knock over rocks, so I would avoid them. If you are looking for a big grazer try an abalone or keyhole limpet, or even a turbo snail. They are all good algae eaters and are IME reef safe

Turbos are reef safe...True to the fact that a Tiger Cowrie is a must avoid species for a reef tank...
