Would one of those PUR filters work until I can get an RO unit?? Better than tap I would suppose.

Ive heard of people using them before. Like you said, not as good as RO but definately better than plain tap water. IMO

Don't know much about water in TN, but some people can do it without RO if the tap water is very good. But the lucky ones are few, and I don't think TN is as well-known as the Pacific NW for water quality.

Anyway, check with your local water company for a water report, and see if it is good enough. PUR filter does not remove mineral, and may not do much to chloramine, so it can be an issue. I suggest you take a look at some fo the recent articles on water quality in either AAOM or RK online magazine and see if they can be of help to you.

I used one of those when I had a 29 gallon tank. But as said RO is better. Home Depot and Lowe's sell countertop filters which are ok as well.

If I remember right, the PUR filters are basically a carbon-block filter. It'll remove some chemicals, but you're right, won't be as good as RO. Certainly better than nuttin though. A carbon block is usually one stage of an RO system.

It won't remove enough clorine so you'll have to use declorinator in the mean time. Also, the point of a RO/DI unit is to remove phosphates and silicates, PUR won't even touch those. I would use grocery store RO water until. Other wise you can see if your LFS will test your tap water for phosphates and silicates. Luckilly my tap is undetectable, so I have always gotten away without the slow and expensive units. I do test every 3 months, just to be safe.
