tunze turbelle

anyone have an opinion on this product?

having some microbubble issues with my powerhead 802, beginning to add some soft corals, need to increase turnover, all excuses to buy a new powerhead

lastly, if i go this way do i need to start moving towards some type of wave simulator?

moving towards mostly softies, some hard corals

Eric, this is probably better suited for the GRD, so I'll copy it there. Experienced hobbyists have more of a likelihood of having played with this piece of equipment

Being European ive heard quite allot about these pumps, and i can say that Tunze in general has a very good reputation as a top of the line equipment manufacturer. Defenately rated on a par with Deltec and better than Aquamedic to give you some scale. Have you checked the new Tunze streams out, i guess you probably want the turbelle as id imagine theyd be quite cheap now. Good pump, can be a bit noisy in an open hood on the larger models.

The stream is a big propellor in a housing- makes a very heavy flow of lower velocity. Excellent product, I love mine. Pricey though.

I too was looking into getting a turbelle for my new tank. Do you mean wavemaker, like wavemaster, or surge device when you say simulator? I have read that you can't use a wave maker (like the wavemaster) with the turbell pumps. You have to use the multicontroller from tunze for this. That is a major bummer considering the multicontroller costs more than the pumps.

Anyone have experience with the turbelle?

I have a 120, and the lowest powered stream that doesn't come with any controller or anything. Its plenty powerful! Can only be swiched on or off a few times a day; I have mine on all the time except for a few hours every night.

while we are on the subject, what is the amount of turnover in a tank that people recommend?

I recently installed a 6080 stream on my 150. It is very strong and provided me with the additional current I wanted. I have never seen my acros happier. The better polyp expansion is proof enough for me it was worth the money, $180 from marine depot. It puts off 2250 gph, much more the the hagen 802 that is still in there which only puts off 350 gph.

The turbelle at 215$ only puts off 700 gph, so if you go with that you are paying more for less output. The only big difference is in the looks and style they move water. The turbelle is a centrifugal pump that is above the water line so you olny see the green strainer and output. The stream is more like a power head with a boat prop instead of the classic impellar.

is all you have in your 150 then the 6080 at 2250 and whatever you get from your sump (guessing 1000 or so)

is 3250 for a 150 the right math (20x turnover?)

do you have a controller for your 6080 for wavemaking, etc, and is that important

Just for clarification, in my 120 I also have an opposing Gemini powerhead going on and off every 3 minutes, a mag 9 (or 12?) on a closed loop with a seaswirl, and the fairly meager return from the sump.

Yes the stream at 2250 and the return at around 1200 gph. I also still run the hagen 802 at 400 gph for a total of 3850 for about a 25x turn over. Works great for my mixed reef. SPS, Softies, LPS and clams. The 6080 isnt adjustable using the controller, So I dont gear it back at all.

Howdy again,

As for turnover, I think the minimum is about 8x your tank volume. But as you can see, more is better as long as your corals and fish are splattered up against the tank walls. You want alot of water movement, but you don't want your tank to be a whirlpool.
