Euroreef skimmer - okay to fill holes?

Hoping I could get some input about what to do with my Euroreef skimmer. I drilled the cup not long ago and put a drain line in it to a bucket, so I dont have to empty the cup so often. However, since the top of the cup has those small holes around its perimeter, whenever the foam builds up in the cup, it manages to squeeze it's way out of those top holes, and make little foam spheres. I'm affraid they could get into the tank water.

Is it alright to fill the holes in with silicone? Why are the holes there on the cup lid to begin with?

If there were no holes there would be no place for the air to escape. I had a beckett that was drilled for an external collection cup. The idea is when the waste collector get full it doesn't let any air esacpe adn stops the skimmer.

On the Euroreef I dont know ho that would work since the colelction cup has the loose top.

The euroreef works the same way.While the top is somewhat loose the holes are to let air escape from the skimmer . Remember the top sits on top of the collection cup. And there is a hell of a lot of air in all that foam
