I have 1 maroon clown about 2”, and I decide to buy 1 more to make a pair. But the new one always attacks by the one in the tank at every time try to put in. what should I do now. The new one a bit smaller then the old one.
I had been try to take him out, but no luck. He always hides in the rock. Next week I going to add more rock, before that may be I take all the rock out for rearrange, at the same time I will take out all the fish and try your suggestion. Thank you, I let you know if success.
Make sure the new one is 1/2 the size of the established one or less. Try setting up an egg crate house for him (with the opening sized so only he can get in and out until the female is ready to accept him). Or some other place where he can take refuge. If the little one swims up to the bigger one and is shaking in fear as she nudges him around, they are starting to get along. That was my experience at least.
If he is only hiding in the tank and not eating, I would get him out and let him recuperate in a quarantine tank for a week or so before reintroducing them.
Adding a substantial amount of rock should be enough to confuse the female. You probably don't have to rearrange it if you don't want to.
The book "Clownfishes" by Joyce Wilkerson?? has a section on this and is a great reference.
this trick worked for me. i bought a uw refugium kit that cpr makes. i put my new clown in the container by the anemone where my existing clown lives, they got more used to each other in three weeks. the old, big clown was still a little aggressive but it was much better then before.
I had a similar problem when I added another Clark to my tank..the big (female) battered the smaller (more than likely is a male now) for a few days...She eventually layed off and now they're inseperable.. Maroons are extremely aggressive and if able to do it again, id buy both clowns simultaneously..
I know someone who successfully paired a nasty old tomato clown up by dividing the tank with eggcrate, and putting the new clown on the other side until they got used to each other.
What I did now place the new clown in 8X4in container and place it in the tank, the old one visit him but still in aggressive manner. I will leave it for couple week let see what happen then.
