I have a toadstool leather that is in great shape except for a 3/4" square tear in the outer 'skin', for lack of a better word, of the stalk. The spot where the outer 'skin' is missing is white, with the rest being a normal color. Is this harmful or will the coral be OK and recover?

Same happened to mine. It has began splitting since. Practically in half.

Now if it is not splitting then you have something that is causing the tear. Check for predators and your water quality. With good water quality it should heal.

I forgot to mention that I just bought it, but did not see this as it was obscured in the viewing tank and isn't that big (I checked again and it looks to be only 1/2" square). Thanks, I will keep an eye on it.

If it is new I would keep an eye out for those little white nudibranchs.

So far it doesn't seem to have opened up 100%, although I have seen it at 80-90% open. There are some white edges on some of the coral, very little, and I haven't seen any nudis. About how long should it take to become fully extended? I got it on Friday, so this is like the 2.5 day mark.

It could take a week. Sometimes mine stays closed for days after a water change.
