I need to buy at lest 2 new pumps in the next few weeks, one for the closed loop I am addinging to the 50 Gal. in the house and one submersable for the sump return on the 50 in the garage.

I am looking at : Mag, Quiet one, Ehiem, GEn X, Panworld, Ocean Runner

I'm hoping not spend more than around $100 each. I want 1200 GPH for the loop and 700 for the sump.

What I want to know is which pumps in this price range are quiet with low heat?

Thanks
Wendy

No need to greet me, I have been around reefs.org for years. I just forgot my username, pasword and changed email accounts. These things happen with age.

If you want your old user infor back PM len, he can get it for you.

For pumps in that range I had luck with Mags. I had 2 mag18's and 1 mag12. No problems with either heat or noise. I would go with a mag12 or 18 on the CL and a 7 or 9 on the return depending on the losses you have.

Well, I did some quick research for you yesterday, and then got busy and didn't post it

Model, price, output, head at half of output
Quiet One 5000, $138, 1330 gph, 8'
Mag 12, $98, 1200 gph, 10'
GenX PCX-40, $129, 1190 gph, 16'
PanW 150PS, $219, 1100 gph, ?

I looked at performance curves to determine the head pressure before the pump was reduced to half of its rated output, e.g., the mag12 outputs about 600 gph at 10' of head. I was unable to find performance curve data for the PanWorld pump, but it looks very much out of your price range.

The Quiet One pumps are known for adding some heat. The Mags are known for some seal issues when run external. Just anecdotal info.

Thanks for the info. Why does the quiet one 5000 cost so much more than the 4000 and use twice as much energy? The output difference is only about 300 GPH.

They are both in my price range($50 and $80) and have simmilar flow but with the 4000 using only 50 watts and the 5000 using 120 I am wondering if there is something better about the 5000, Is there a reason for paying $30 more and use double the electricity.
