I have an unused whole house filter and just got in the DI cartridge. I have the orientation correct b/c of a well placed this side up arrow. but need to know if the flow goes...

through the middle at the top, down and out?
or
from the bottom up through the middle and out?

thanks,
Steve

DI filter will need to have the water going up thru the cartidge. With that said, most filter housing is designed to have the input water goes to the outside of the cartidge, and the water will goes inside and up thru the middle hole and exit. There should be an arrow on the housing.

Does it matter at all? At a really basic level (like my understanding of the DI cartridge) it should not matter... please enlighten me.

I doubt it would but I might as well use it as the manufacturer intended. The only effect I can forsee is that the color change would work its way across the cartridge the wrong way if it is going backwards and I guess I can live with that.

Only reason the flow direction might matter is if there is more/different physical filter media on one end to prevent the resin from escaping. If memory serves, the Aquarium Pharm. Tap Water Purifier has got a big wad of floss at the top and only a thin foam pad on the bottom.

How long should a DI cartridge last with 2 TDS going into it? I have an opaque filter housing and want to know how soon I should check it.

thanks

My DI is still going strong after one year of service with Cary water.
So, I would not worry for a while. I think that my RO water is 4 TDS.

Tough to say really - depends on how much water you're making with it each day/week/month/etc. The only way to know for sure if it's working OK or not is to monitor it. FWIW, with a standard 10" DI cartridge on mine and 1 to 2 TDS water coming into the DI I think I get a few hundred gallons of product water out of it...
