I have 2 questions.
1- do SL crabs MOLT? Reason is because a few weeks after I bought one I removed what I thought to be a dead crab, but looking back on it.. it COULD have just been a shell.

2- Is the crab in the pic a Sally Lightfoot crab? If not what is it.. and should I be concerned? I've not noticed anything being eaten, or damaged. The crab's claws also look pretty blunt on the end. As far as I can tell the crab is black.

I actually ran the mag-scrubber by him and he did little more than scoot around a little. Wasn't in the least concerned with it. But it IS alive.

Is this my sally that has grown up ? Or is this a guy that has somehow been in my tank unnoticed for the past few months?

Thanks,

B

Sallys have longer legs that that...I think that's a common rock (or stone) crab. Rock crabs are opportunistic omnivores that often come in on LR. I have one in my nano right now that I'm trying to catch. :)

Have you lost any snails in the past few months? He could be the culprit.

All crabs are crustaceans, have a hard exoskeleton, thus ALL of them must moult in order to grow.

I have 3 SL crabs and when I put them in there they ate all of my shrimp! I havent since found anything missing except one of my firefish, but I doubt it was them.

I'll try to get a better pic of him over the next few days. You can't see his legs .. half of him is under the LR burried in the sand.

I haven't noticed anything missing.. no corals appear to be nipped at and I've not really kept up with the snail count.

I'll keep an eye on the guy.

Never had any problems with emerald crabs.

They do a great job of scouring rocks for left over food and they get into the holes of the LR well.
