Gorgonians

Hi,
I was at my LFS today, and they had a gorgonian, it was dark yellow with orange spots all over it. My question is, how hard are they to keep? I know that they are non-photosynthetic, so light isn't an issue, and they would eat plankton (DTs)? I had a reef long ago, and I remember never to try one because they were so difficult. What do you think?

not all gorgs are non-photosynthetic, actually it is usually the ones with white polyps that are non photosynthetic. Yes they will feed on DT's phyto or oyster eggs. I am unsure on the particular one you mentioned though.

I've kept yellow gorg before, twice actually. First time was on DT's and it survived about 3 months. second time was on Liquid Life and that one lasted nearly a year before a tank sitter killed it while I was out of town. Daily feedings for sure

they need really good flow i mean GOOD they live at the edges of the reef where the current is the strongest.

my friend HAD the one you are talking about and it died. to low of flow ad to little light are my guesses

I'd say if it's photosynthetic is a keeper, otherwise let it be. It's practically guaranteed to die.

Thanks for the help, I think I am going to let it go, as it is non-photosynthetic, I don't need to ruin a good thing going with my reef.

btw....don't you think a 25% change a week is a bit excessive? Or is that a typo?

No typo, I don't skim, and I run an Eheim with ceramics, with 20 lbs of LR. Five gallons a week is a infintesimal price to pay for supreme water.
