My father is an electrian and can get all kinds of lighting supplies. My question: I wanna set'up a nice lighting system to keep a variety of corals. The lights will go into a custom hood, so what equipment do I need. If someone could give me exact specs it would be great. I'm just not sure on ballasts, moon lighting, halides, etc... please help

Maybe 250 or 400 W metal halide? Check out some of the DIY light kit and I am sure you father will be able to get everything you needed. Not much of a discount unless you want to buy used equipement.

Make sure the color temp of whatever bulbs you get are at least 6500K… preferably >10,000K if you want a more crisp blue/white color. Anything 6500 or below will look yellowish and isn’t usually desirable for a reef tank.
