How the heck to you replace these things? They are in really tight, and the plastic is starting to dry rot? I'm not going to buy another hood. This is made really really poorly, and after spending another 100.00 bucks on bulbs, the ends are dryrotting? What gives?

...does anybody want any fish? I'm seriously thinking about shutting down this whole hobby.

Don't give up!

I assume you're talking about PC's, and the same thing happened to my straight-pin coralifes in my Aqualight. The pins began to rust, and it took a good bit of prying and pulling with a screwdriver to get them out. I used Catalina bulbs as my replacement, but one of them seems to flicker occasionally at night. Either way, just be careful not to rip the hood apart. I haven't replaced the bulbs for a second time yet, I hope they don't ruin the fixture.

Hey Wings,

I just switched out a DIY set of 4 x PC compacts that were straight pin and upgraded to halides.

If you need sockets, shoot me an email and I'll mail you the sockets I got for the cost of the box/stamp.

I know I have 4 and very well may have a few extra's laying around too.

My E-Mail addy is:

[email protected]

Standard usps is at most like $ 7.20 for a priority box shipped about anywere in US.

Let me know if I can help...Be glad to.

Yeah, I've got PCs. This was my second time around replacing them, the first time it was, well ok.. but this time, the plastic boot just crumbled. (Just be ready for that.) It's the 48" coralife pc 4X65s. I'm not sure I'd purchase another one because of this. I'm not an electrican (can't even spell the word :) ), so I've got my brother in law coming up next week to see what he can do.

Try to do this the next time you replace the bulbs, put a little bit of grease on the pins, gaskets/o-rings, and the plastic part. This will help keep moister/salt out of the fixture and make pulling the bulbs out a lot easier next time. Just be sure not to put too much, because you will have a mess on your hands and you want to make sure none of it gets in the tank, especially if you have an open top.

*Disclaimer, I have never done this on my tank, but it works very well with all other electrical/lighting situations I have been in. So it would make sense that it will work with this the same.*

Yeah, really any kind of grease or vasaline would work. This would even work well with MHs, not sure about fluorescents though because of the fixture they use. If you do use it and the bulbs don't turn on, you probably have too much on the pins and they can not make a good connection, so just wipe a little bit off. But I doubt it would happen. :D
