THIS is a skimmah!

Well, actually, two skimmers. The filtration workhorses of the 20k or so gallon reef tank at the Steinhart Aq. in SF. The platform I'm on is about 8 feet in the air.

Hey guys! I am there on Mondays in the morning and am usually done at noon or so. I'm sure there would be no problem with you coming down to get a look at everything! Maybe we could arrange a date where all of us could meet up.

The big tank is amazing! 17 feet tall, lit by several 2000W MHs...the best part is that it's just a prototype for the 250,000 gallon reef they are building to open in 2008.

Are there a lot of Bay Area people here on reefs.org?
I'm in San Francisco and have just started my first reef system and I would love some sort of network of reef buddies.
Also, the idea of going behind the scenes of a commercial aquarium makes me drool in classic Homer Simpson fashion

Yeah Matt I love the top part of it, 1) because no kids screaming NEMO at the anemone & clownfish that are visible from the stairway, and plus that's where all the good junk happens, they have some mangroves in pots up there, that big ol' overflow at the top is great too!

But yeah heard this is just a prototype to work out the bugs on REALLY deep reefs. Any word on why not try to utilize natural sunlight in anyway?? Is it just a matter of them leasing the place so cutting a hole in the ceiling is out? Or are there other issues (being San Francisco weather and all).

I really try to go to that place on the 1st Weds of the month, since it's free and all, I get off work around 10am, so by the time I get there I might just find a parking place near by.

On Mondays a diver gets in the tank at around 2pm, so that's another reason to check it out.

I'm not sure why natural sunlight isn't being used. Could be because it's temporary, or just because SF doesn't get a whole lot of sunny days like you said. :? With the great depth and narrow width of that thing, the sun would have to be nearly directly overhead to hit the bottom anyway.

I think the solar tubes use a lens and mirrod walls to consentrate sunlight so it doesnt have to be directly overhead.. so they might make sense but a regular skylight doesnt sound very promising..
