Thought this came out in December '05... Anyways, I didn't start seriously reading mine yet, but flipped through it and man-oh-man is it ever freekin thorough and detailed. It's not a book for the faint of heart, lol... worth every penny IMO.

i just orded it from MD . should be here by the end of the week. i also picked up all his other books except the 2nd one ( forgot to order it)
anything j sprung writes is worth reading havent read as much from the other guy delbeek
any of you ever meet j sprung? is it just me or does he always hide in a corner at the fish meetings

Out of curiosity how useful is the book to those who already have been in the hobby a while? It seems that a lot of the information (I have calfo's book on coral prop) is fairly known or easily found online, with a few "oh I did not know that" type areas. Not to mention depending upon how long it took to write could be based upon old technology

Julian is quite personable and a real talker if approached.

You don't understand until you've held the book in your hands... it's gotta weigh at least 5 pounds. It's almost 700 pages, you know. The detail is unprecedented, for example, I didn't start reading mine yet, but I did see there's about 6-7 pages on the dangers of releasing an aquarium critter into the wild.

But yah ok 700 pages... I read through most of Calfo's book in about a week and it stayed in the bathroom! That's one thing I will say for it, it does make for a nice bathroom reading book But of course I couldn't return it if it's been in the bathroom

You need both- Borneman's and Sprung's. I think they are both terrific books, and if you ever get a chance to hear them speak-GO!!! I was lucky, and saw them both in Orlando last summer along with Martin Moe.
Another book I really like is Paletta's Ultimate Reef Aquarium. Hundreds of pics of tanks with all their specs, water parameters, and regiments. these are all successful tanks, but the methods are not the same.

This is a totally different kind of book- I really like Borneman's coral book- interesting captive care notes on each. Sprung's vol. 3 is not on corals, but on the aquarium itself. if you're unsure, go to your lfs, page through it, and see what you think. Barnes & Nobles will also order any book- and you're under no obligation to buy it!
