Water Tests .. Whats the deal here?!?!?!?!?!

Hey all .. just for the heck of it I tested the mixed salt water that I have in a 40 gallon plastic can (I always have pre mixed salt on hand) ... anyhow .. the results are:

No3 (Nitrate) 5 PPM

No2 (Nitrite) .5 PPM

Whats with that?!?!?!?!?!?!?! the nitrite in my standby premixed salt water is TOXIC!!!!! and what really pisses me off is I just did a 2 gallon water change with it in my nano! .....

you may want to test yours before you add it to your tank!


I also tested my fresh water from my $200.00 RO/DI unit ... the results are:

Nitrite: 0 PPM

Nitrate: 5 PPM

Again .. whats the deal with that??????

Cheap test kit's = cheap results.
Most every test kit on the market save for a few ( ALL OF THE LIQUID TESTS USUALY DO) will read amonia in or around 10-15 ppm no matter how clean it is, and nitrates in or around 10ppm.
I would say your fine. But buy a dry tab, or a moe reputable kit to be safe in the future.

You need to test the water going into the RO/DI and the water coming out of it. A TDS Meter will work for that. If you aren't getting good results then maybe the filters in it need to be changed, they don't last forever. If its brand spankin new, you are supposed to let them run for a certain amount of gallons to get them broken in.

Once you are sure you are getting good water out of it then you can proceed to eliminate other causes.


You don't wash the mix up plastic can with soap and water do you?

maybe your holding water is going through a little cycle? i think if you keep any water around long enough it will go through some cycling.
