Looking to set up a small group for my 145g and considering about 5, but wondering on their behavior.

Laid out the LR with little caves and arches, will the chromis go within the rock work or just hang out over it?

Currently have 2 clowns and a purple tang.

I had a 3-pak in my 27 hex and had agressision issues and now only one exists. I think it was due to the constrained conditions. With a bigger tank, they should reduce competition.

People don't give Chromis spp. enough credit for being kind of mean. :D

When they get large they can become aggressive to each other and to other small zooplanktivores like flasher wrasses, small anthias, and firefish. They also get quite large compared to the little anchovie sized fish you buy at the store.

My advice is to try Chromis retrofasciata. www.liveaquaria.com sells them. They only get 2".

They should be just fine. I have 4 in my 135G. They stay out all day in front, and interact with each other. They do not stay in a tight shoal
(school) but do keep to a loose group.I have a Yellow Tang ,small Blue Hippo, pair of orchid dottiebacks,Pygmy (Cherub) Angel, and aFlame Angel, they all get along fine, no agression whatsoever. All but one sleep in the rockwork. One is wierd and stays up on top of the tank in back all night and drifts back and forth with the current. They do love to eat!
As a matter of fact the little hippo is about their size and hangs with them most the time.

I had six... then the next day I had 5 and the next, three. you get the picture. I got down to one and he has been there 6 months and never seems to bother anyone. He is at the front of the tank all day. I just think they hate each other. However, I never saw them pick on each others who always disappeared over night. I thought for a while that something else was preying on them but i discared that theory when the solo survivor flourished.

I too have experienced the slow whittling down in numbers. Started with 8 and am down to 4 in about 3 months.

Mine don't spend any time in the rockwork. Always above, in front, behind.
