Skimmer possible overkill

I am thinking of up grading the skimmer on my 60. I have an ER ES5-2 on it now, or had when it was running as it is. I am thinking of getting the ES135 for the reset. The skimmer is rated for twice the size tank I would have. Would it be a waste of money to have such a big skimmer on my tank? I think it would be helpful.

If you get a bigger tank (60+ gallons) in the future...you will still be with in the skimmer's rated gallon usage.

My theory on the issue after having run a Euroreef ES5-2 (the smallest they have) on a 20 (and winding up with it overskimming...)

If it looks like its getting overskimmed (which is hard to judge) then just cut back on the frequency. - Skim for 12 hours instead of 24, or 8 instead of 16, whatever...

In my case I believe it was overskimming (for my tank) because my xenia started staying contracted for longer and longer periods.

Trimming back on how often I ran the skimmer seemed to make them happy but no water parameters that I could test for showed a change, just the reaction I saw from the xenia.

Then again, I pretty much run by "rule of eye" too... - Different inhabitants are water quality indicators for me pretty much. I don't rely so much on actual test results unless I'm totally lost on a problem or looking for confirmation of my suspicions.

A lot has to be said for "if it 'aint broke, don't fix it" - but I'd say go for it if you can afford it.

Here is what is driving the decision. I have the money from the over seas time I have been working. I am planning on mostly SPS with just a few LPS and clams. Maybe no LPS depending on how things go together. My wife and kids like lots of fish. I figure with a oversized skimmer I can get one or two more fish in my tank and feel comfortable about it. For the new set up I am planning on having a 29 gal sump.

I'm not far off with that but going mostly LPS & softies in a 72.. - I'm looking into a small group of chromis possibly.

No prob. If this would not have happend I would be in a similar position and Rob has been fighting the algae and stuff. It is a chance for me to fix the things I were not happy with.
